In the golden autumn of September, when fruits were abundant, Baowu Magnesium, CHANGAN Automobile and Chongqing University to successfully co-held the “CHANGAN Automobile–Baowu Magnesium–Chongqing University Automotive Lightweight Technology Exhibition” at CHANGAN Automobile's Global Research and Development Center. This first joint appearance by the three parties on the stage of technological innovation marked a new exploration of deep integration among industry, academia, and research in the automotive sector to promote green transformation, and it received strong attention and support from senior leadership and technical experts of all three sides.
The opening ceremony was hosted by Weijun Zhi (Assistant to the General Manager, and General Manager of the Magnesium Products Division at Baowu Magnesium), followed by opening speeches from Zhongqiang Huang (Chief Expert at CHANGAN Automobile), Fusheng Pan (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor at Chongqing University, and Chief Scientist of Mingyue Lake Laboratory), and Xianghong Kong (Party Secretary and Chairman of Baowu Magnesium). The guests unanimously stressed that lightweighting is key to the transformation of new energy vehicles, and magnesium alloys—as the core material for lightweighting—are of great significance. As requirements for range and energy-efficiency in new energy vehicles grow more stringent, lightweighting has risen from an “optional optimization” to a “core competitiveness.” CHANGAN Automobile, Baowu Magnesium, and Chongqing University shoulder an important mission: to continuously increase the application of magnesium-based materials in the automotive field, help China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) industry capture the commanding heights of lightweighting technology in global competition, and—driven by technological innovation—advance the automotive industry’s green transformation and high-quality development.
This exhibition showcased Baowu Magnesium and its subsidiary Boao Magnesium Aluminium Manufacturing Co., Ltd. with cutting-edge materials, advanced processes, and system solutions in automotive lightweighting. The exhibits covered key NEV domains—body systems, cabin, battery systems, e-drive systems, and chassis systems—including a series of “hard-core” outcomes such as magnesium-alloy instrument-panel cross-beams, front cover assemblies for the rear floor, seat frame, pedal frames, and center console brackets. These exhibits intuitively demonstrate the outstanding weight-reduction, efficiency-boosting, and energy-saving performance of magnesium-aluminum alloys, fully showcasing Baowu Magnesium’s strong technological prowess.
On site, technical staff from relevant departments engaged deeply—through hands-on observation and professional briefings—in exchanges around innovative applications and collaboration for magnesium alloys, building consensus, immersively experiencing the real value of these materials for improving vehicle performance and optimizing energy consumption, and directly feeling the deep integration of materials science and automotive engineering.
Concurrently, a three-party technical seminar was held at the CHANGAN Automobile Global R&D Center, where representatives from Baowu Magnesium, Chongqing University, and CHANGAN Automobile delivered technical reports. Technical teams from the three parties held in-depth discussions on core issues such as overcoming technological bottlenecks, with enthusiastic and substantive exchanges.
All three sides stated clearly that they would take this exhibition as a new starting point, establish a regular communication mechanism, and form a joint R&D team. Baowu Magnesium will give full play to its strengths in materials, Chongqing University will provide solid technical support, and CHANGAN Automobile will leverage its broad market advantages to jointly promote the transition of magnesium-alloy technologies from laboratory to production lines, achieving effective transformation of scientific and technological achievements.
During the exchanges, Xianghong Kong and his delegation visited Mingyue Lake Laboratory and the CHANGAN Auto’s Digital Intelligent Factory.
As one of the main forces of China Baowu’s new-materials sector, Baowu Magnesium has always taken building strategic emerging industries and shaping a magnesium-industry ecosystem as its mission. Going forward, Baowu Magnesium will continue to be innovation-driven, working hand-in-hand with excellent partners such as CHANGAN Automobile and Chongqing University, closely following industry trends, accelerating the development of China’s magnesium and magnesium-alloy sector, and empowering innovation and upgrading across China’s automotive industry.
