Academician Fusheng Pan Delivered a Keynote Speech at the 2022 (Ningde) Science and Technology Forum in Fujian Province

On 17 August 2022, Fujian 2022 (Ningde) Science and Technology Forum was held in Ningde, Fujian Province. Academician Fusheng Pan, Professor of Chongqing University; Honorary Director of National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys; and Chairman of Chongqing Science and Technology Association, attended the forum and gave a keynote report of the conference entitled "Great Potential of Magnesium-based Energy Storage Materials in the State of Carbon Neutrality". Leaders from the Fujian Provincial Committee of Jiu San Society, Fujian Provincial Political Consultative Conference Economic Committee, Fujian Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology, Ningde Municipal Committee, Ningde Municipal Government, Ningde Municipal Political Consultative Conference and other relevant departments and relevant enterprises attended the meeting.

Ningde is an internationally renowned lithium battery city. Ningde's lithium-ion new energy industry is led by Ningde Times New Energy Technology Co. Ltd and Ningde New Energy Technology Co. Ltd, owning the world's largest base for lithium polymer batteries, covering key materials such as positive electrode, negative electrode, separator, electrolyte and other supporting projects including battery components, machinery, and equipment, packaging materials, etc. With the theme of "New Energy - New Power", the forum attracted a group of experts from renowned universities and enterprises in China to participate.

Academician Fusheng Pan pointed out in his report that energy conservation and emission reduction are the basic paths to achieving the country’s dual carbon goals. Among them, the large-scale use of renewable energy to realize energy transformation is the key to achieving the dual carbon goals. However, the application of clean and renewable energy has hit a "ceiling", and a breakthrough in energy storage technology is urgently needed. This report introduces the energy storage characteristics, technical problems, progress, and prospects of magnesium-based hydrogen storage materials and magnesium batteries; and especially elaborates on the significance of new generation high-safety batteries and new type of safe, efficient hydrogen storage and transportation materials to the targets of dual carbon; as well as on the significant role of these materials in new energy vehicles, wind and light energy industry, power industry, aerospace and other fields. The report points out that lithium batteries have significantly contributed to contemporary economic development and will continue to play an important role in the future. However, the essential safety of lithium batteries has not been fundamentally solved, and the metal resources used for lithium batteries in China are in extremely short supply and heavily dependent on imports, which affects China's energy security and resource security. Therefore, to protect China's energy and resource security, support the dual carbon goals, and protect people's lives and property security, the development of a new generation of secondary ion batteries with high security, resource autonomy, and sustainability is required. The relevant enterprises in Ningde City have already started to develop a new generation of sodium batteries. Magnesium batteries are a high potential candidate among the new generation batteries, with abundant resources, high safety, low metal cost, small environmental burden, etc. Thus, magnesium batteries have attracted worldwide attention; more and more scientists and technicians have started to conduct technical research in cathode materials, anode materials, and electrolytes, etc. The Japanese industry believes magnesium batteries may become a disruptor in the field of batteries.

Many domestic experts and scholars in the field of new energy and industry elites attended the forum and discussed the future path of the new energy industry. After the forum, Academician Fusheng Pan, accompanied by Changping Wang, Chairman of Jiu San Society Fujian Province, visited Ningde Times, New Energy Technology, and Yanan Electric for research. Other major experts who attended the meeting were Professor Jingfeng Wang, Secretary of the Party Committee of Materials college, Professor Aitao Tang, and Professor Guangsheng Huang.
