Academician Fusheng Pan delivered the presentation "Magnesium-based materials with great potential in the context of carbon neutrality" at the symposium of Academy of Engineering

25 May 2021

"Engineering Frontier Forum: Chemical, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering in the Context of Carbon Neutrality" symposium was held in Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) on May 21. Academician of CAE, chairman of Chongqing Science and Technology Association and Honorary Director of the center, Prof. Fusheng Pan was invited to deliver the speech "Magnesium-based materials with great potential in the context of carbon neutrality" at the symposium. Nearly 100 experts and scholars from academia and related industries attended the conference. The online symposium is live streamed on the platforms including XuetangX, KouShare, and CKCEST. The total number of online viewers at that day exceeded 25,000.

In the keynote presentation, the experts including academician Zhongmin Liu from Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, academician Zhanfeng Cui from Oxford University, academician Fusheng Pan from Chongqing University, academician Xinping Mao from University of Science and Technology Beijing, academician Max Lu from University of Surrey and academician Zuoren Nie from Beijing University of Technology, focused the discussion on the opportunities and challenges on low-carbon transition, energy reduction, materials engineering, steel industry, hydrogen production and exploration of science and technology innovation in the context of carbon neutrality. The topics of the sub-forums were "Industrial Energy Saving and Emission Reduction" and "New Energy, CO2 Conversion and Energy Storage", respectively. 20 experts from 19 universities and institutes were invited in these two forums, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Sichuan University, Southeast University, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, East China University of Science and Technology, Sinopec Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical, and Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. These experts discussed various topics such as chemical industry, materials, energy, fuel, ferrous metallurgy, and resource recycling and so on.

Prof. Fusheng Pan introduced the new frontier magnesium-based materials from five aspects in the context of the carbon neutrality in the speech: firstly, why to vigorously develop magnesium and magnesium alloy in the context of the carbon neutrality; secondly, the energy-saving and emission-reduction effect and application of lightweight magnesium alloy; thirdly, the characteristics and prospects of magnesium-based hydrogen storage materials; fourth, the characteristics and prospects of magnesium battery materials; and fifth, the achievement on the magnesium-based energy storage materials by National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys. In his speech, Prof. Fusheng Pan believes magnesium-based solid hydrogen storage materials have the advantages of high hydrogen storage density, good safety, low cost and hydrogen purification. Once magnesium-based solid hydrogen storage materials are used in large-scale application, hydrogen filling stations will become history; abandoned power of wind and light will be effectively alleviated; and the production and application of hydrogen energy will dramatically grow. On the other hand, magnesium ion batteries can effectively solve the problems of lithium-ion batteries, such as poor safety, resource shortage, high cost, and environmental pollution. Once magnesium ion battery is commercialized, it will be a disruptive revolution in the battery industry and expected to be a breakthrough point for the substantial increase of new energy vehicles.
