On August 19, 2021, the performance evaluation meeting of the National Key Research and Development (R&D) Program, "key technology for manufacturing large-size high-performance deformed processing materials of magnesium alloy", which was led by Chongqing University and undertook by academician Fusheng Pan, was successfully held. The meeting was held in a combination of online and offline way. Prof. Hejun Li (Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, professor of Northwestern Polytechnic University) was the leader of the performance evaluation team. Xiaoyun Mou (deputy director of Chongqing Science and Technology Bureau), Ju Ming (vice president of Chongqing University), attended this meeting. The meeting was hosted by President Caizhao Zhu (Institute of Scientific Research and Development, Chongqing University).
The National Key R&D Program is integrated from the original National Key Basic R&D Program (973 Program), National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program), National Science and Technology Support Program, International Science and Technology Cooperation and Exchange Program, Industrial Technology R&D Funds and Public Welfare Industry Research Special Program. This project focuses on the key technology for manufacturing large-size high-performance deformed processing materials of magnesium alloys, which takes solving the core competitiveness of high-end magnesium alloy industry as the goal-orientation. The project has five subjects, which was undertaken by Chongqing University, Institute of metal research (Chinese Academy of Sciences), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanxi Yinguang Huasheng Magnesium Co. Ltd. and Beijing University of Technology, respectively.
After five years of work, the subject groups have fully completed the task objectives and achieved a number of important outcomes. In accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the program performance evaluation group consists of 9 reviewers, including academician Hejun Li (Northwestern Polytechnic University), Prof. Kezhao Zhou (Central South University), Researcher Jialin Chen (Kunming Institute of Precious Metals), Prof. Zhiwei Shan (Xi'an Jiaotong University), Prof. Tongmin Wang (Dalian University of Technology), Prof. Ying Liu (Sichuan University), Prof. Hongzhi Cui (Shandong University of Science and Technology), Prof. Xiangfa Liu (Shandong University) and Prof. Yida Deng (Tianjin University). Academician Hejun Li was the leader of the group. More than 70 representatives of project undertaking and participating institutions attended the meeting. They are from Chongqing University, Institute of metal research (Chinese Academy of Sciences), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanxi Yinguang Huasheng Magnesium Co. Ltd., Chongqing Changan Automobile Co. Ltd., Shanghai Aerospace Equipments Manufacturer General Factory, Shanghai Institute of Satellite Engineering, Longkou Conglin Aluminum Co. Ltd.
At the meeting, Ju Ming (vice President of Chongqing University) firstly delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the meeting organizers, he expressed his gratitude to the leaders and experts who participated in the program performance evaluation meeting. Xiaoyun Mou (deputy director of Chongqing Science and Technology Bureau) introduced the basic situation of Chongqing's science and technology innovation initiatives and national science and technology program projects. He expressed that the project team would take the opportunity of this evaluation to further refine the outcomes and identify problems and shortcomings. Academician Fusheng Pan briefly introduced the background and significance of the project, the research team of project, the completion of the implementation of each sub-project and the main results achieved in this project.
Prof. Wenbo Du (Beijing University of Technology), Prof. Jingfeng Wang (Chongqing University), Prof. Jie Dong (Shanghai Jiaotong University), Prof. Qizhi Le (Northeastern University), Researcher Yuansheng Yang (Institute of metal research, Chinese Academy of Sciences), on behalf of the five sub-projects groups, presented the self-evaluation report of the comprehensive performance of each sub-project to the expert group. Their reports included the background and significance of the sub-projects, the research tasks, achievements of targets and indicators, the main achievements, the usage of funds, the subject organization and management etc. After listening to the report of the subject groups, experts questioned the relevant issues and made overall comments and scores on the completion of each subject. The expert group unanimously agreed that the subjects have completed the research tasks and assessment indicators very well, with outstanding outcomes and remarkable effectiveness. The expert group put forward valuable opinions and suggestions for further improvement of the performance evaluation information, and raised new expectations for further R&D work of the subject institutions in the future.
At the end of meeting, the project leader, Prof. Fusheng Pan, made a concluding speech and expressed his sincere thanks to the work and guidance of the evaluation group. He put forward requirements for the subsequent comprehensive performance evaluation of the project, requested the subject groups to further revise and improve the completion materials in accordance with the requirements of the evaluation group. He hoped that the participating institutions would continue to unite and collaborate to further promote the development and application of magnesium alloys.

Ltd., Shanghai Aerospace Equipments Manufacturer General Factory, Shanghai Institute of Satellite Engineering, Longkou Conglin Aluminum Co. Ltd. jointly participated this project.
Through five years of implementation, the project has revealed the novel synergistic controlling mechanisms for the strengthening and ductilizing of magnesium alloys, developed the new design theory of strengthening phase and purity theory of large volume melt. It elucidated the rheological behavior and deformation mechanism of ultra-high strength/large-size alloy, revealed the formation and distribution rule of the residual stress. A number of key technologies for the preparation, processing and application of high alloying and high-purity ingot billets, high-strength and tough profiles and forgings, high-precision plates and coils, deformed material with stress reduction and surface protection of large-size and high-performance magnesium alloys were developed. Project results have realized the application demonstrations in key industries and major projects, resulting in significant economic profits, energy saving and emission reduction effect. It has made an important contribution to the upgrading of China's magnesium industry and the progress of the industry.
