The 2023 Annual International Magnesium Science and Technology Award Ceremony was successfully held

On December 11, 2023, the 2023 Annual International Magnesium Science and Technology Award Ceremony was successfully held in a combination of online and on-site, and the on-site Ceremony was in Hebi, Henan Province. This ceremony was jointly hosted by the International Mg Society and Journal of Magnesium and Alloys. It was co-organized by the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium alloys, National Key Laboratory of Advanced Casting Technologies, Chongqing Institute of New Energy Storage Materials and Equipment, Chongqing University National Innovation Platform for Industry-Education Integration of Energy Storage Technology, Chongqing Industry-University-Research Cooperation Promotion Association, Hebi Industry and Information Technology Bureau, Hebi Economic and Technological Development Zone, Henan Magnesium Industry Ltd. etc.

Prof. Fusheng Pan (Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of International Mg Society, Chairman of Chongqing Association for Science & Technology, vice President of Chinese Materials Research Society, honorary Director of National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys (CCMg)) served as the chair of the award committee. Prof. Karl Kainer (former Director of Magnesium Innovation Center in Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany, and former President of International Magnesium Association) served as the vice chair. The award committee consists of 113 renowned experts from 23 countries, including China, the United States, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. The Annual Award selection is conducted every year, and is categorized as Person of the Year, Youth of the Year, Excellent Paper of the Year, Excellent Thesis of the Year, Standard of the Year, Innovative Process of the Year, Innovative Product of the Year, and Special Contribution on Innovation of the Year.

Academician Fusheng Pan delivered an opening speech and introduced the background, selection methods and processes of the International Magnesium Science and Technology Award in detail. Mr. Hongjun Hu, Vice Mayor of Hebi City, made a welcome speech and introduced the development of magnesium industry in Hebi and warmly welcomed the guests. In this year's award evaluation, three well-known companies and seven renowned experts, including Chongqing Boao Magnesium Aluminum Metal Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Henan Magnesium Industry Co., Ltd., Shangqing Times Metal Information Consulting (Beijing) Co., Ltd., Daolun Chen from Ryerson University in Canada, Yuanding Huang from the Helmholtz Zentrum Hereon, Germany, Zisheng Zhen from Xi'an Magontech Magnesium Industry Co., Ltd., Jin Zhang from Beijing University of Science and Technology, Mark Easton from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia, Hisashi Ohara from the Magnesium Association of Japan, and Jianxin Zou from Shanghai Jiaotong University, were awarded the Special Contribution on Innovation of the Year. Irene J. Beyerlein from University of California, Santa Barbara, Huiyuan Wang from Hebei University of Technology, Mikhail Zheludkevich from Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, and Rongchang Zeng from Shandong University of Science and Technology were awarded the Person of the Year Award. Yuan Yuan from Chongqing University, Marta Mohedano Sanchez from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Qun Luo from Shanghai University, and Darya Snihirova from Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon were honored with the Youth of the year Award. Four research papers published by Baihua Qu from Chongqing University, Yangxin Li from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongzheng Xin from University of New South Wales, and Xiaojun Wang from Harbin Institute of Technology have been recognized with the Excellent Paper of the Year Award. Qingchen Deng from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhi Zhang from Harbin Engineering University, Shibo Zhou from Chongqing University, and Cheng Wang from Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon have been awarded the Excellent Thesis of the Year Award. The novel combination casting process for metal-enhanced magnesium-based composites developed by Prof. Xianhua Chen from Chongqing University, and the continuous plasma electrolytic oxidation technology for magnesium alloys developed primarily by Meotec GmbH in Germany have received the Innovative Process of the Year Award. The ultra-large magnesium alloy integrated rear floor developed by Prof. Bin Jiang from Chongqing University, and the magnesium alloy building formwork developed jointly by Baowu Magnesium Co., Ltd., Zhongtian Shidai Magnesium Co., Ltd., and Chongqing University have been honored with the Innovative Product of the Year Award.

The representative award winners include Prof. Daolun Chen (Member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering), Prof. Yuanding Huang, Prof. Mikhail Zheludkevich, Research Fellow Darya Snihirova (Helmholtz Zentrum Hereon, Germany), Prof. Mark Easton (RMIT University, Australia), Mr. Hisashi Ohara (Japan Magnesium Association), Mr. Kun Lei (Henan Magnesium Industry Co.), Dr. Song Tang (Nanjing University of Science and Technology), Dr. Qingshen Deng (Shanghai Jiaotong University), Dr. Syed Wahaaj Ali Rizvi (Meotec GmbH, Germany), Prof. Yuan Yuan and Associate Prof. Jinxing Wang (Chongqing University), Dr. Marta Mohedano Sanchez (University of Madrid, Spain), Prof. Irene J. Beyerlein (University of California, Santa Barbara, U.S.A), and Prof. Huiyuan Wang (Hebei University of Technology), delivered speeches both online and offline.

The conference was conducted in a combination of online and offline. The offline venue was set in Hebi City, Henan Province, and the online meeting was conducted by ZOOM. More than 500 delegates from 10 countries, including China, the United States, Germany, Spain, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Turkey, India, etc., attended the conference on-site, and nearly 100,000 people attended to or watched the conference online and offline.

This award ceremony not only summarizes and outlines the research, development and application of magnesium and magnesium alloys and products in the past year, but also puts forward the development direction and efforts for the future development of magnesium and magnesium alloys. The award-winning individuals and projects cover a variety of fields such as magnesium-based structural materials, magnesium-based functional materials, etc., which will have an important impact on the development of magnesium and magnesium alloys in the next few years.
